Bionstruments and device Development DEPARTMENT


The core competence of the department is the use of spectrometric methods for solving measurement problems in the fields of medicine, pharmaceuticals, and analytics. Applications range from in-process control to surgery-related medical diagnostics. Our fields of expertise are near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), fluorescence spectroscopy, and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). Depending on the task, we will choose a suitable measurement mode, optimize the measurement hardware as well as the measurement process, and develop appropriate evaluation algorithms. The interdisciplinary environment of the FZMB facilitates the handling of complex R & D projects as well as practical testing and further development of customer-specific sensors, instruments and devices.


Selected application examples:

– Arthroscopic system using NIRS to quantify the degree of damage to articular cartilage
– Benchtop NIR system for quality control in the food industry (meat and sausage products, yeast products)
– Analysis of gestation in horses by means of IMS
– Sensor system for wireless monitoring of acid-base balance in cattle

As a research and development partner, we are happy to provide you with our expertise in:

– Chemometrics / multivariate analysis (development of evaluation algorithms, reference analytics)
– Device development (concept, design and construction, functional models, system validation)
– Tissue optics / biomechanics (determination of tissue parameters, simulation of radiation propagation, structural mechanics)
