Infection-related weakening of the bees and thus reduced performance or even the loss of entire colonies lead to economic and ecological damage.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Increase in bee diseases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threat to our bees from diseases is increasing. This is due to various environmental factors, but the effects of climate change are a particular contributory factor. The change in climatic conditions is leading to a global spread of pathogens and parasites that are dangerous to bees. Highly infectious diseases that threaten entire colonies are particularly dramatic. Determining this from visible symptoms, for example, is usually very difficult, often impossible. Rapid and reliable diagnostics are therefore required. As we know from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, for example, certain protein compounds (proteins) of a pathogen can be detected. This allows the exact type of pathogen to be identified with high sensitivity and specificity.      <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-x-large-font-size wp-elements-84dc01f80941c24e4bdc7fb4917f3bdd\" id=\"h-nachweis-bienenerreger-unsere-forschung\">Detection of bee pathogens: Our research<\/h1>\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>With the aim of making a sustainable contribution to protecting bee health, we are developing diagnostic tests for important bee diseases. These are not only used in cases of infection, but also for prophylactic testing. The pathogen that causes AFB is the bacterium <em>Paenibacillus larvae<\/em>. The highly infectious spores are transmitted by predatory bees or contaminated food and the larvae are infected with the pathogen. An infection usually leads to death.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new AFB duplex rapid test detects a larval infection with high sensitivity. The causative agents of nosemosis are the only microsporidia species pathogenic to honey bees, <em>Nosema apis<\/em> and <em>Nosema ceranae<\/em>. The consequences of the infection are, depending on the species, reduced performance and shortened lifespan of the bees or even the loss of the colony. Even a weakening of the colony results in an increased susceptibility to further infections.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NaDiNe research project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In cooperation with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.hu-berlin.de\/bienenkunde2\/\">State Institute of Apiculture<\/a>, we are working on an easy-to-use immunological test system for laboratories and testing facilities. The test result provides certainty as to whether and in what way a bee colony is infected with the nosemosis pathogen. Compared to previous diagnostic methods, the immunoassay is intended to provide faster and cheaper detection with a high sample throughput.
